As stewards of Chattanooga’s rich legacy of urban design and planning, Chattanooga Design Studio’s (CDS) internship program connects the Studio’s focus on education to young professionals, students and universities. As part of the program, interns assist Studio staff with design and planning projects located within Chattanooga’s dynamic downtown. In 2018, the CDS invited Hunter Gee, as their innaugural Urban Design Fellow, to work with three architecture & urban design students. They were charged with investigating the history and current conditions of Chattanooga’s Westside District. The students toured the area, met with residents, poured over maps and other reference data and produced a study with conceptual ideas for the transformation of the district. This exercise was a starting point for what is envisioned as a much longer and intentional community engagement process for an important urban district and the people who live there.
